Introduction

Professional hair extensions can cost several hundred dollars for a smaller service and more than US$2,000 for a larger installation. For a concrete US reference, Beauty Locks in North Miami Beach lists US$785 for 40 tape-in pieces at 20–22 inches and US$2,080 for 200 keratin-fusion strands, including hair, installation, cutting and styling. These are that salon's published examples, not national averages.

The useful question is what you receive for the quoted total. Hair-only prices, application-only fees and complete salon packages describe different purchases. Maintenance, professional removal and replacement can change the budget substantially after the first appointment.

This guide uses named salon examples, a budgeting worksheet and current DR specifications to explain those differences. Prices were checked on November 3, 2026; confirm current availability, currency, taxes and inclusions before booking. DR Hair Extension is a manufacturer and wholesale supplier. Our product quotations are separate from a local stylist's service charges.

What should a professional extension quote include?

Ask for the initial appointment and ongoing services to be itemized. “Full head” is not a sufficiently precise specification on its own.

Cost componentWhat to confirm
Extension hairMethod, hair option, shade, texture, length, grams and supplied pieces
Installation laborFitting method, amount installed and any specialist preparation
Cutting and blendingWhether shaping the extensions into the natural haircut is included
Color workNatural-hair color, extension toning or custom root work, if appropriate
MaintenanceRemoval, retaping or repositioning, washing, drying and refitting inclusions
Final removalStandalone removal price and whether another service changes the charge
ReplacementNew hair or system-permitted reapplication, assessed separately
Other chargesApplicable taxes, delivery, consultation fees and required care products

Ask how a deposit is applied to the final balance and what the cancellation terms are. A deposit paid toward the appointment should not be counted again as an extra service cost in your own worksheet.

Keep the quoted specification with the reference photograph. A price cannot be meaningfully compared if the second salon is pricing a different length, quantity or result.

Confirm the scope before paying a deposit

Ask the salon to identify what would change the agreed price on the appointment day. Additional color work, a revised length or a larger fitted quantity should be discussed before the extra work starts. If a quote is provisional until an in-person consultation, record that distinction rather than treating the online starting price as the final bill.

Check whether the stylist accepts the selected hair system and whether the quoted labor applies to new hair, previously worn hair or both. Preparation of an existing set can involve different work from opening a new pack. Also ask what happens if the product or desired style changes between consultation and fitting.

For a result tied to an event, separate the product arrival date from the fitting appointment and final styling. Confirm whether a second styling visit is included. A supplier's dispatch estimate does not reserve a salon appointment or guarantee enough time for a revised shade selection.

If the total exceeds your budget, ask the stylist to propose a different appropriate scope, such as a smaller volume goal or a shorter finished length. Compare that revised specification in writing rather than buying an arbitrary lower quantity and expecting the original result.

Published salon price examples in four markets

The examples below illustrate different pricing structures. They do not form a representative survey, and the services are not directly equivalent. Dollar amounts are labeled by market; confirm the local currency with the provider. No exchange-rate conversion is applied.

Market and first-party sourcePublished exampleHow to read it
US — Beauty Locks, North Miami Beach40 tape-in pieces, 20–22 inches: US$785; 100 keratin-fusion strands: US$1,100Its menu includes hair, installation, cut and style; verify the selected quantity
UK — Beauty Club London20 tape pairs at 50cm: £710 hair + £300 fitting = £1,010Hair and fitting are separate line items; stylist selection may affect fitting price
Canada — J3 beauté, GatineauTape application only: CA$180; tape package with hair, 40–60cm: from CA$650The application-only option requires client-supplied hair; package pricing is a different scope
Australia — Pierre Haddad Hair, SydneyPublished guide: A$600–1,500 for initial tape-in applicationThis is the salon's market guidance; its individual quote is determined at consultation

Beauty Club London's menu also lists a smaller five-pair, 30cm option at £155 for hair plus £160 fitting, totaling £315. The difference from its longer 20-pair example reflects a different specification, not two prices for the same service.

For mainland Europe, request a local quote in the relevant currency and clarify tax treatment. A London example cannot establish what a salon in Paris, Berlin or another European city charges.

Why two clients receive different extension prices

Length, grams and the amount of work

A request for subtle fullness near the existing length differs from adding substantial length through a blunt haircut. The second brief may require a different hair quantity, blend and placement plan. Have the stylist explain how the proposed specification supports the desired result.

DR Tape-in Hair has a standard 100g pack with 40 individual tabs, averaging approximately 2.5g each. Two hair-bearing tabs per attachment would form 20 pairs. This purchase format does not prescribe the amount suitable for a client, and another supplier's “40 pieces” may use a different counting convention.

For quantity calculations and spare inventory, see our grams, tabs and clip-in quantity guide. Buying two packs does not mean every piece should be fitted.

Shade, texture and construction

Rooted color, dimensional blends, curl pattern and a particular attachment format should be included in the quotation. Confirm how a custom specification affects price and production rather than assuming a photograph identifies a standard stock item.

Hair labels also need explanation. DR offers Virgin Hair and Remy Hair options; ask what is supplied for the selected order and approve the sample. A label alone does not establish a measured lifespan or justify a promised number of reapplications.

Stylist scope and location

A specialist's quote may cover consultation, fitting, a detailed blend and ongoing support. Compare those inclusions directly instead of treating every difference as a hair-product markup.

State customer requirements early: desired result, budget, maintenance availability, exercise or swimming routine, and any concerns about the natural hair. Installation preparation and product application should be planned around those requirements. A revised look or timing may be more appropriate than reducing essential professional work to meet a price target.

Compare costs by extension method

The billing unit matters as much as the method name. Ask whether the salon charges by individual piece, paired attachment, strand, row, time or complete service.

MethodUseful quote specificationOngoing cost question
Tape-inIndividual tabs or pairs, length and total gramsWhat is included in removal, replacement tape and refitting?
WeftGrams, supplied wefts and planned installed rowsIs the charge per row, and what happens at a full reinstall?
K-tip / fusionStrand weight, count, bond system and fitted amountIs removal separate, and does the next service require new hair?
Nano RingStrand specification, rings and placement planWhich tip, ring and hair checks accompany repositioning?
Clip-inSet weight, panel layout and base constructionAre initial fitting, blending and occasional styling priced separately?

DR Genius Weft can be supplied as 100g divided into two, four or five wefts. Supplied pieces are not automatically installed rows. A salon charging by row needs to specify its fitting plan rather than multiply labor by the pack's piece count.

Likewise, long Tape Weft material and individual tape tabs are different formats. Compare the supplied width and cut plan when pricing a long weft. A similar name does not make the products or labor identical.

DR K-tip / Flat Tip Hair has a standard 100g / 100-strand format at 1g per strand. Agree care, professional removal and any permitted reapplication before budgeting for reuse. Our K-tip lifecycle guide explains that separate decision.

Budget beyond the first appointment

Plan the period you actually want to wear extensions, whether that is an event, several months or an ongoing service. Ask the stylist to set the review, maintenance and removal plan for the chosen system and natural hair. Do not select a calendar solely to make the annual total look smaller.

Use this calculation:

Period budget = initial hair + first fitting and blending + planned maintenance visits + removal + replacement hair + other agreed charges.

Avoid counting an included item twice. If a package already covers cutting and styling, adding a second blending allowance overstates the total. If a maintenance appointment excludes removal or preparation, those items need their own lines.

Worked budget example — illustrative, not a price quote

Suppose a US-dollar planning worksheet uses the following invented amounts. They demonstrate arithmetic only and are not DR prices or a salon recommendation.

Budget itemIllustrative amount
Initial hairUS$600
First fitting and blendingUS$250
Agreed preparationUS$50
Four maintenance visits at US$175US$700
Final removalUS$100
Total before tax and other extrasUS$1,700

If the professional plan instead requires six such maintenance visits, the same worksheet becomes US$2,050. If replacement hair is needed, add its confirmed cost. These scenarios show why a lower first appointment price does not necessarily mean a lower total commitment.

The number of visits is an input from the actual service plan. It is not evidence that four or six appointments are appropriate for every method or client.

Does reusable hair make extensions cheaper?

It can reduce the need to purchase new hair at every appointment when the product permits reapplication and the hair remains suitable. It does not remove professional labor, attachment supplies or assessment costs.

For DR Tape-in Hair, reuse requires replacement tape and professional assessment of the hair's condition. The stylist sets the refitting schedule according to growth, placement and care. Price the work needed for the selected system rather than assigning all tape-ins a guaranteed number of cycles.

Fusion policies vary by product. Do not budget for unlimited retipping merely because the lengths still look smooth. Confirm the supplier's permission and the stylist's process, labor charge and criteria for replacement.

Temporary Clip-in Hair has a different service pattern. DR lists 100g, 120g, 160g and 180g set options with customized piece counts. Compare the selected panel layout and any professional blending or event styling, rather than adding a permanent-extension maintenance schedule to a removable set.

Can buying hair directly reduce the salon bill?

Only if the chosen stylist accepts the product and agrees the arrangement before purchase. Ask whether they will fit client-supplied hair, what specifications they require, and who handles a product concern separately from a fitting concern.

A wholesale hair quote covers the agreed supplied product. A salon package can also include consultation, fitting expertise, cutting, overhead and support. The difference between those totals is not automatically the salon's profit.

For a salon or brand, calculate landed product cost: hair, custom specification or packaging, delivery and applicable destination charges. Divide by usable saleable units, keeping sample and stock purchases separate from an individual client's fitted quantity.

DR's regular Tape-in and K-tip minimums are 100g per color and length. Paid sample hair uses wholesale hair pricing, with delivery quoted separately. Other collections have their own order terms. Confirm the selected product, quantity and dispatch arrangement before promising an appointment date.

Approve quality and service before committing

For sample review, record the shade, texture, length, weight, piece count and attachment construction. Evaluate the selected product with the professional who will fit it. Any proposed extra factory testing should be agreed explicitly rather than described as a completed test.

DR's confirmed quality-control process includes production-stage checks, weighing every pack and final sampling for weight, measured length, color, shedding and smoothness. A sampled nonconformity triggers full reinspection of the affected shipment. This shipment inspection supports conformity checks, not a guaranteed installed lifespan or client result.

Our documented US salon sampling experience began with a color ring and 300g across Genius Weft, Tape-in and Flat Tip formats before later ordering. It illustrates product evaluation before expanding a collection, not a published cost-saving trial.

Request a written service quote after assessment. Keep the hair specification, included tasks, maintenance plan, removal arrangements and payment terms together. This creates a clear basis for approval and later replenishment.

Frequently asked questions

How much do professional hair extensions cost with installation?

The total depends on quantity, method, length and included services. The named US salon examples above include US$785 for a 40-piece tape service and US$1,100 for 100 keratin-fusion strands, with hair and fitting included. Obtain a current local quote for your own specification.

Why is one quote much cheaper than another?

Check whether each includes the hair, fitting, preparation, cut and styling. Compare the same grams, length and attachment count. An application-only fee and a complete hair-and-fitting package are different services, even when both are advertised as extensions.

Are maintenance and removal included in the initial price?

Only when the written quote says so. Ask for the cost and scope of later visits and final removal. Confirm whether retaping, washing, drying and refitting are one appointment charge or separate items.

Are tape-ins always cheaper than K-tips or wefts?

No universal ranking applies to every service. Amount fitted, length, labor units and maintenance requirements differ. Compare complete proposals for an appropriate result rather than choosing the lowest method label on a menu.

Can I bring my own extensions to a salon?

Some salons accept client-supplied hair; others restrict the systems they install. Get approval before ordering and clarify responsibility for the hair and fitting. A supplier quotation does not confirm that your chosen stylist will use the product.

Does DR's quotation include salon installation?

DR provides manufacturing and wholesale product quotations. Ask for the selected hair specification, paid sample arrangement, delivery and any customization. Arrange a separate professional fitting quote with your stylist, including maintenance and removal.

Conclusion

Budget for the complete service rather than a headline hair price. Start with a suitable method and exact quantity, check what the first appointment includes, and add the professional maintenance, removal and replacement plan. Named price examples provide context; a written quote for the actual product and result is the basis for a purchasing decision.
